Ecuador will blow your mind in the most enriching, raw, and inspiring way. Straddling the equator is a pretty important job, and it definitely lives up to the hype. There are so many micro-climates, and almost every type of dramatic landscape is carefully laid out between its borders. From the Andes mountains to the Amazon, the adventure line-up is endless.
We (John, Lex, and I) were pretty short on time and opted for exploring Baños, a thermal-bath infused town tucked into the mountains and teeming with adventures. Despite the rain, we cruised down zip-lines, went mountain biking down the Ruta de Las Cascadas in Baños, and enjoyed too many meals at Casa Hood.
We then found the seclusion of the Secret Garden Hostel at the base of Cotopaxi. (It is my favorite hostel in the world, hands down…so be sure to check it out if you go)! You’ll wake up to wild horses, llamas, and frozen fingers after your 15,000 foot climb to Cotopaxi.
If you venture north of Quito, wander to Otavalo, one of South America’s best artisanal markets. If you’re looking for warmth and waves, spend some time relaxed by the beautiful coastal waters of Puerto Lopez and Montañita. Whale watching and surfing are the activities of choice here!
